Notice that the first agent to reach the target takes less time in large groups than in smaller ones. This is a question of simple probability. The higher the number of agents in the group the higher the probability that in any one cycle at least one agent will be within detection range of the target. However, the last agent to reach the target—our criterion for group performance—takes less time in small groups. The results in Table 1 refer to the case in which each agent starts from a randomly chosen location. However, the same results are obtained if all the agents start from the same location. In this case the difference between small and large groups is somewhat smaller. |
