Having a leader implies that followers tend to remain close to the leader and to explore the environment in a more aggregate way. This is beneficial because when the leader or one of the followers happens to discover the target, the other individuals in the group will also be near to the target. Without a leader the other individuals in the group will on average be further away from the target.
